There is a lot in the name – Post 13

And some things shouldn’t be called what they are.

The first and foremost in this list is “Eve Teasing”. Ask any woman who has been subjected to catcalls, indecent gestures, touches, shoves and worst still, grouping. Ask them if there was any element of tease in it? Giving these actions a name as harmless as “eve teasing” makes them almost non-criminal. Each of this action is done with the intent of getting some sexual gratification. This is outright harassment and should be called that.

Another such evil is “honor killing”. Murdering people on account of pure hatred and misplaced sense of self and community cannot be equated to anything done for “honor”. It’s a brutal act, totally premeditated. Rage is what leads a person to do something so barbaric. So why name it as “honor killing”.

To eliminate a problem it’s important to first understand and then accept the quantum of the same. Only then can curative and preventive actions can be taken. It’s important that a criminal act is seen as a one and not some flippant action. And calling them by what they are might just help.

I too do not understand the meaning of Eve Teasing. How do we limit some action to “teasing” ?
If group of guys sing at you stupid songs when you walk in your neighborhood ,is it called teasing? Would you walk in that street again without being scared /worried that they might try something more dangerous next time.
I feel , eve teasing”(if they insist on calling it by that name),should be a crime.

  2. I agree I stop calling it eve teasing years ago… its anything but that and honor killing there cant be any honor in any killing. full stop

  3. Swaram says:

    Totally agree with u!

  4. SupMM says:

Eve teasing – Because the Eves (women) are getting teased

Honour killing – To save the honour of those who are the killers

    That’s their corrupted perverted logic

  5. Iya Bhatia Malhotra says:

yes, giving these acts such names just dismisses the quantum of the crime that these are..

  6. Bharti says:

O so so right. Teasing… Such a misnomer.

  7. Deeps says:

Couldnt have agreed with you more,Iya! Eve teasing is as much an abuse as rape or molesting or any heinous act and can be as traumatic.
As for honour killing, like monika said, there is nothing honourable in killing. Killing is a crime, even if you prefix it with honour. Period.

    • Iya Bhatia Malhotra says:

true.. ask the one who has been subjected to this and they’ll know how much tease it was..

and thats why it shoudlnt be called honor killing..

  8. Smitha says:

Couldn’t agree more! Such crimes with such euphemistic names just help the society pretend that they do not matter.

Honor killing? The moment we attach ‘honor’ to it, it becomes kosher, doesn’t it? And eve teasing! I wish it were just ‘teasing’!
