Living in Singapore – Let’s talk about food – Post 18

These are the must have local food items that one shouldn’t miss while in Singapore. Although this country offers an almost international cuisine, there are a few typical Singaporean dishes which according to me are must tries. The cuisine here luxuriously borrows from Chinese, Malay, Indonesian and Indian cuisine.  Here is the list of top must have dishes in Singapore, strictly according to me!!

• Hainanese chicken rice – It’s a dish of steamed chicken served over fragrant rice and accompanied with chili sauce, soya sauce and ginger paste. One of my favorite local foods.
• Chicken noodle soup – basically its boneless chicken in broth along with slurppy noodles. The variations include using homemade rice noodles and fish or pork instead of chicken.
• Satay – Marinated and skewered grilled meat, tastes best with peanut sauce. Perfect place to have it is from the street hawkers
• Char Kway Teow – Thick flat rice noodles cooked in pork fat and pork sausages!
• Chili crab – hard shell crabs cooked in a thick tomato and chili-based gravy, another must try!
• Claypot chicken rice  –  rice cooked with soy sauce in a claypot and topped with braised chicken
• Laksa – rice noodles in a coconut curry gravy with shrimp, egg and other seafood!
• Curry puffs – Its Singaporean version of our good old Samosa. And fillings vary from potato, sardine, utha (dry fish), chicken etc etc
• The good old Dim Sums – not to be missed!
• Singapore Sling – Our famous indigenously developed cocktail
