Thanks to another interesting conversation with the taxi driver, I have some fodder for the blog!
Taxi driver is a very interesting breed in Singapore and so I have said before. Most of them are old and have taken up taxi driving to lead a relaxed, ‘on my terms’ sort of life. Most of them have done hard work in their lives – some of them were café owners, some ran food stalls, some, to end of my wits, were HR Managers working in IT companies and thanks to recession are now driving taxis.
What never ceases to amaze me is the wealth of experience and knowledge they have gathered over time. They hold opinions, grudges and spectacular ideas around a lot of issues. Their general response to problems, culture, society, nationality, country, etc is immensely fascinating.
Most of them feel Indians are smart and intelligent – ‘computer wizards’. They accept the fact that Indians are hard working and possess good amount of grey matter. They believe that Indians have awakened to their potential and will end up making their mark in the world’s order. Today’s driver mentioned to me, on this fine early morning taxi ride – “Singapore Government doles out a lot of special favors to Chinese and Malays. Indians are approximately 10% of Singapore’s populations – why doesn’t government hand out some special incentives for them?”, then he added very interestingly “I am actually not highly disturbed by this as I know Indians don’t need these special favors, they are intelligent, hard working, efficient people’. Heartwarming, right?
